The goal of this project was to design a fresh exterior for Marmot’s Trestles and 600-fill sleeping bag lines. Designed for sustainable manufacturing, these bags support Marmot’s brand identity and their environmentally conscious consumers.

Many of the fabric cuts were designed with mirrored or rotated symmetry, meaning that multiple panels can be produced simultaneously with a single cut. This allows faster cycle time and drastically reduces material-waste for this high-run product. The entire line is based on the same cut/sew construction with different color fabrics used to distinguish each model’s temperature rating; 0F orange, 15F blue, 30F green

graphic + experience design &#124; fall 2010

.......................
I was the lead graphic and experience designer for the IDSA-SF's 2010 Bay Area’s Best. This event recognized the great design and many prestigious awards won throughout the last 10 years by the SF bay area's world-class community.

After designing the primary graphic identity, I translated that into all web and print needs, such as website graphics, email banners, posters, and event flipbooks. I also created all the event slideshows and other graphics contributing to the event experience. This consisted of interactive trivia questions before the main event, a 400-page slide show of all the bay area IDEA winners over the past decade, and a finale sponsor recognition and Design of the Decade awards presentation.

		<description>.......................
smart design &#124; summer 2010

.......................
While at Smart, I designed and installed a set of signage icons for their SF office. The extisting signage around the office was either non-existent or in dire need of improvement. Smart Design’s company culture is fun and witty, so their office identity should represent that.

The restroom icons were by far the most difficult to design. I wanted them to be clever and unique, but also non-stigmatizing and easily understandable. The final icon designs are a play on gender stereotypes - which is what Smart’s “Femme Den” has pledged to overcome... irony is funny.

After designing a draft set, I printed out full-size icons on paper, cut them out, and taped them up to make sure the grapics and sizing were right. After all the paper mock-ups and the final graphics and quotes were approved, I ordered vinyl and started applying it. The signage was placed at foot-level, where it is visually more subtle. This also allows the individual characters to interact with the ground. Each icon tells a story about what’s inside it’s doorway. For instance, the elephants playing badminton may seem random, but together with the mouse, these icons represent the “big” and “small” conference rooms.

The icons were such a hit, that Smart Design decided to make them the main component in their uniforms for the 2010 Bay Area Design Dodgeball Tournament. Even with the many other designs generated, my icons won the vote to become the prestigious dodgeball shirts. They were (undoubtedly) a key factor in Smart Design’s tournament championship.

		<description>.......................
smart design &#124; summer 2010

.......................
Within the bike-friendly city of San Francisco, having to run errands by-foot or by-car is very unfortunate. I realized this after a short while at Smart Design, and I took it upon myself to build a communal office bike. Since it's completion, this bike is used on daily-basis to pick-up everything from sandwiches to sand-paper.

The project began with craigslist, where I found a $50 used bike with a good-quality chomoly frame. After stripping the frame of old components and paint, I took it to a local powder-coater and picked out a good orange. Then, I completely overhauled it; faced the head-tube and bottom-bracket, installed a new drivetrain, wheelset, tires, brakeset, levers, grips, headset, seat post, saddle, rack, baskets, and lock.... basically everything's new but the frame.

With a color scheme that conveniently matches both Smart Design and the SF Giants, it is a welcome sight on the streets and in the office. The sugino chainring with gold chain make it courier-approved, while the functional rear-baskets add a utilitarian touch. The custom headbadge and ergo-handlebar grips make this a true smart-bike, because nothing says Smart Design like a pair OXO good-grips.

I worked on this during my freetime over the course of a few weekends. I decided to focus on the topic of light because it's such a critical part of life, yet so intangible and often taken for granted. My primary goal was to create functional, thought-provoking concepts.

After the logotype for Reach Innovations had been established, I became more involved in the product side of their identity. These are some of my initial packaging design concepts for one of RI's first products, an ipod armband. These concepts were conceived with a focus on accurate brand identity and also a legitimate regard for sustainability and environmental impact.
